Werner Müller began his university studies in 1965, studying economics at the University of Mannheim as well as philosophy and linguistics in Duisburg and Bremen.
After earning his Master's degree in economics and a doctorate in linguistics, he initially worked as a lecturer for business mathematics and statistics at the University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen, the University of Mannheim and the University of Regensburg from 1970 to 1972.
From 1973 to 1980 Dr Werner Müller worked at RWE AG, where his last position was that of Head of the Market Research department.
In 1980, he moved to VEBA AG as Head of the Energy team and subsequently became Executive Officer.
In 1992 he joined the Management Board of VEBA subsidiary Kraftwerke Ruhr AG, where he was responsible for energy procurement, energy sales, district heating, and waste management/waste incineration.
He left the company in 1997 to work as a freelance industry consultant.
From 1998 to 2002 he served as Germany's nonpartisan Minister of Economic Affairs and Technology. In 1999, he also briefly held the position of German Finance Minister.
In 2003, Dr Werner Müller returned to the private sector, serving as the Chairman of the Executive Board of Ruhrkohle AG (RAG) until 2007. As a result of the restructuring of RAG and the resulting establishment of the RAG Foundation in 2007, Dr
Werner Müller became the first Chairman of the Executive Board of Evonik Industries AG, a position he held until the end of 2008.
From 2005 to 2010 he was the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Bahn AG.
He was appointed to the Board of Executives of the RAG Foundation on 1 December 2012.
