Gerd Pieper served on the Herne City Council and was Herne's honorary mayor from 1981 to 1994.
Gerd Pieper worked for various associations, including as president of the Industrie- und Handelskammer (Chamber of Commerce and Industry, "CCI") for the middle Ruhr region from 1992 to 2011, and he continues to serve as honorary president of the CCI.
At the state level, he served on the Executive Board of the Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry in North Rhine-Westphalia for many years before serving as president of the Association of all sixteen member chambers of commerce and industry from 2001 to 2009. At the federal level, he served as the vice president of the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry from 2005 to 2009, the central organisation for 80 CCIs in Germany, while also serving on the Association's Education Committee and Commerce Committee.
He also served as vice president of the German Retail Federation (HDE) from 1997 to 2006 and as vice president of the HDE in North Rhine-Westphalia from 2000 to 2002.
Gerd Pieper has been Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund's vice president since 23 November 2008.
In addition to the responsibilities mentioned above, he is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Signal Iduna Group, Dortmund, and previously also served as a member of the Board of Directors of Sparkasse Herne.
Gerd Pieper is the recipient of numerous honours and decorations: Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (1992), Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (1998), Order of Merit of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Ring of Honour of the City of Herne (2003), title of "Honorary Citizen of the Ruhr Region" (Bürger des Ruhrgebiets, 2005) and Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (2009).
